In the Norse sagas, Fenrir is the great wolf foretold to break free at Ragnarök and swallow Odin himself. The gods bound him with a ribbon as light as breath — forged from the sound of a cat’s footfall, a woman’s beard, the roots of a mountain, the breath of a fish. A monument to the things that cannot be held.

The archetype of all wolves. A deep charcoal coat, broad chest, a quiet, deliberate presence. They run in family packs across snow, marsh and mountain, communicating in a vocabulary of looks long before they speak.

In myth

Odin sits on Hlidskjalf and sees all the worlds. He gave an eye to drink from the well of wisdom; he hung nine nights from Yggdrasil to learn the runes. Around him: two ravens, two wolves, and a long silence. The white wolf is his ice, his clarity, his cold.

In nature — Arctic Wolf

The Arctic wolf lives where summer is two months long and the sun does not set. Its coat is a deep, double-layered cream — not white but warm, the colour of old vellum. It walks across sea-ice as if it were land.

The wolf who chases the sun

In myth

Sköll runs at the sun’s heels across the sky. He will catch it, the sagas say, at the end of days. His name means "treachery" or "mockery" — the long shadow that follows light. The eclipse, in the old language, was Sköll’s near miss.

In nature — Black Wolf

The black coat is not a separate species but a melanistic variant of the grey wolf — a gene believed to have crossed from early domestic dogs thousands of years ago. The result is a wolf the colour of basalt and winter night.

The wolf who chases the moon

In myth

Where Sköll runs after the sun, his brother Hati runs after the moon — the same hunt, repeated nightly. His name carries the weight of "hate" but also of relentless pursuit, the quiet violence of time itself.

In nature — Red Wolf / Canadian

The Red Wolf wears a rust-red mantle along the spine and a copper undertone in the winter coat — the colour of late autumn beech. Smaller than its grey cousin, recent genetic work places it as a species of its own — endemic, endangered, distinctly North American.

In myth

Old Scandinavian belief held that the deep forest had a will of its own — the skogvætte, a presence felt rather than seen. The wolf was its voice; the pine, its language. To meet a wolf in the moss was a kind of conversation.

In myth

In Old Norse, vargr meant simply "the wolf" — and also "outlaw", the one who walks outside the village. To wear Vargr is to stand apart, to choose the forest path. A name as old as the language.

The eastern timber wolf carries a golden-camel undertone in its winter coat — the colour of dry grass against a low sun. Smaller than the grey wolf and rarely seen, it lives in the boreal mixed forests of the eastern continent.

In myth

Geri and Freki sit at Odin’s feet in Valhalla. He gives them all his food, drinking only wine; he does not need to eat. They are the world’s hunger and its keeping — two wolves who are one appetite.

In nature — Sea Wolf — Coastal British Columbia

The Sea Wolf of the Pacific coast is genetically distinct from inland grey wolves. It swims between islands, dives for shellfish, and lives off salmon for nine months of the year. Its taupe-grey coat carries the muted tones of driftwood and wet bark.

In myth

The old Eddas speak of the moon-wolves who pull the long winter behind them. Their fur is the colour of frost on stone, and they cross frozen ground in patient strides — the slow patrol of the north.

The Tundra Wolf is the largest of the wolf subspecies, with a thick double-coat that turns to smoke-grey in winter. It crosses frozen ground in long, patient strides across the polar reaches of northern Eurasia.

In myth

Garmr is the great hound-wolf chained at the entrance of Hel, the underworld. At Ragnarök his howl will shake the roots of the world; he will fight Týr, and both will fall. To wear Garmr is to wear a deep, undyed earth — the colour of the threshold.

In nature — Iberian Wolf

The Iberian wolf carries a deep chocolate-brown coat with dark "signa" — black markings along the back and legs. It lives in small, secretive packs in the granite mountains of Galicia and Asturias.
